About the Rijeka Fiume in Flux project:

We want to challenge the way in which you encounter the past – to empower you to engage with the many different, overlapping stories that can be told about a single place, and to discover new stories by interacting with the city in space.

Rijeka (in Croatian), also known as Fiume (in Italian), is a city with a complicated past.

Formerly an important port city enjoying a special status in the Habsburg Empire, it was claimed by both Italy and Yugoslavia after the First World War. It was eventually annexed by Italy in 1924 with the international border running along the Rječina or Eneo river. After the Second World War, the city became part of Yugoslavia when the border moved west of Istria.

Border changes reshaped loyalties, belongings, and practices. But politics alone are not enough to understand the history of the city.
There are many other features that have made Rijeka what it is.
Here, different languages mingled together to create a distinctive way of speaking.

The meeting and entangling of different communities has produced a cultural scene characterized by rupture and change – and yet, Rijeka’s citizens have a strong sense of local identity rooted in a common experience. Inhabitants experienced noticeable dramatic social mobility but also class barriers, and the city attracted newcomers but was also drained of its people. And last but not least, its economy witnessed dramatic ups and downs: at times a thriving port city, with flourishing industries, at other times it became a backwater, unable to position itself in the new state framework. All of this left its mark on the urban space, in the form of key places, monuments, and architecture.

So many stories can be told about this city. The aim of this project is to empower you to explore expert knowledge about the city, and perhaps even discover your own story about Rijeka.

The Augmented Reality feature will only work if you are on site in Rijeka, but you can still use the map and list features to explore the city remotely.

The Rijeka in Flux app makes use of cutting-edge Augmented Reality frameworks for Apple and Android phones and tablets. Augmented reality technology adds virtual spatial features to your surroundings through your device’s camera. Always be mindful of your surroundings when using the AR features of the app.

AR does not work on every mobile device. Your mobile device must be compatible with Apple’s ARKit or Android’s ARCore to properly display the AR features of the App. This is usually fine with more recent devices.
